Farm Fresh Spotlight - Kevin Alcantara

As the 2023 Cubs season approaches, there's a lot to look forward to. Some of the most exciting players are still down in the farm and this series will be highlighting those future Cubs. While most rankings only have 3 Cubs prospects in the top 100 (all 3 in the top 50), there are a ton of guys that are providing excitement for the future.

Let's start with Kevin Alcantara aka The Jaguar...

MLB Scouting Grade

Hit: 50 | Power: 60 | Run: 55 | Arm: 55 | Field: 55 | Overall: 55

(Players are graded on a 20-80 scale: 20-30 is well below average, 40 is below average, 50 is average, 60 is above average and 70-80 is well above average.)

Alcantara is a 6'6" 188lb Dominican outfielder who came from the Yankees in the trade for Anthony Rizzo. Alcantara signed with the Yankees for $1M at 16 years old and was probably the hottest international signing at the time. He has that electric, Javy-like personality that will make him a fan favorite upon arrival at the friendly confines.

One of the most impressive things about Alcantara is his approach at the plate. He has shown a good eye for the strike zone, drawing walks and striking out at a relatively low rate for a young player. He also has a quick, compact swing that allows him to make hard contact and drive the ball to all parts of the field. Last season with Myrtle Beach he hit: .273/.360/.451 with 15 bombs over 495 plate appearances. He projects to be a 30 homer type of player that won't give up average/OBP for power.

He's also just a freak athlete. He won't struggle to find every day fielding opportunities with his speed and strong arm. He'll probably slot into right or left with PCA becoming the everyday CF but he certainly has the ability to play all 3 outfield positions.

At 20 years old, he's not projected to make his MLB debut until 2024. I wouldn't be surprised to see him as a top 10 prospect when he does make that debut. Get to know more about The Jaguar from the Cubs in the video below:
